The new 2011 Model Euro 5 Volkswagen Crafter The Volkswagen Crafter has been revamped with a revised four-cylinder TDI engine, which offers improved MPG. The torquey a biturbo engine has already been seen in the Amarok and the new Transporter finds its way into the Crafter.
The look of the Crafter follows the trend in Volkswagen design with a redesigned front end which emphasises the horizontal lines of its radiator grille and one-piece front facia. The biggest van in the Volkswagen range now looks a lot like the smaller brothers and sisters, the Caddy, Amarok and Transporter. Volkswagen have also improved the interior with new and durable upholstery fabrics, redesigned instruments and various modifications to feature details.
The main improvements are to be found in the engine bay. Out go the five cylinder engines and in come the down-sized four cylinders.
There are three power outputs –109PS, 136PS and a whopping 163PS in the top of the range version – still from a 2-litre four cylinder.
The lowest powered engine brings the CO2 emissions down to just 208 g/km. The next power output has exactly the same fuel economy but gives the driver more power and torque.
Add the Stop/Start technology to the top of the range 163PS Biturbo engine and you get even better fuel economy and CO2 emissions of just 195 g/km and is already proven in the Transporter and Amarok.
Coming to the Crafter range in the second half of this year is the option of BlueMotion technology which includes the engine Stop/Start system with battery regeneration.
VW claim that operating costs of the Crafter have been reduced by up to 25 percent. Compared to previous engines, the modern four-cylinder engines are not only lighter in weight, they also meet the strict limits of the Euro V emissions standard and fulfil – just as the previous model did – criteria for an EEV vehicle.
Thanks to the smaller engines and other changes means that the Crafter is lighter than its predecessor – down by up to 10% on the previous version, giving an increased payload – all benefiting the van operator.
Choose from a total of three wheelbases and four lengths in high and low roof versions. Also a Combi van, dropside or chassis cab are available from the factory.
Inside the Crafter there has been a light freshening of the interior – there are padded surfaces in the doors and redesigned instruments which are now easier to read, and all versions include an integrated gear-shift recommendation as standard. This makes it easier to adopt a more fuel-efficient style of driving.
