The Renault Kangoo range has undergone a number of facelifts and overhauls since it was launched in its original form back in 1997. Today buyers can choose from a range of wheelbase and configuration set-ups, with new models including standard features such as a full height bulkhead, ABS and EBD for practicality and safety. The Kangoo is a popular panel van and one which represents good value for money for many buyers.
The current Kangoo Van can be configured to offer a maximum load volume of three cubic metres, coping with payloads of up to 800kg and items measuring up to 1476mm. The spacing of the wheel arches allows for a whole pallet to fit snugly across the width in the rear.
The Kangoo Van Maxi is equipped with a larger load space and length, providing up to 4.6 cubic metres in its rear compartment. The passenger seat can be folded forwards, allowing the load length to hit 2886mm at its absolute maximum. Two standard pallets can be loaded into the rear with ease, and this is a good measurement strategy that is integral to the design and subsequent success of the current Kangoo range.
The Kangoo Van Maxi Crew comes with a second row of seating to accommodate additional passengers. It retains a good load volume of 2.4 cubic metres as standard, rising to 3.6 cubic metres with the seating reconfigured. The payload drops to 740kg as a result of the design change, and there is a load length of 1008mm when more seats are present.
A number of ENERGY dCi engines are available with modern Kangoo vans, each of which comes with auto stop-start functionality as standard to give fuel efficiency a boost. Up to 67.3mpg can be squeezed from these power plants, and they are also capable of very clean operation - with lower CO2 emissions than older equivalents. A 1.2 litre petrol engine known as the ENERGY TCE 115 is also specifiable, offering impressive power and efficiency in its own right.
On the dash the Kangoo can feature the Renault R-Link system, which controls things such as entertainment, radio and navigation. Compatible with a number of smartphone variants, it is a smart system that also features downloadable apps. It's the first of its kind for a vehicle of this type. Extras such as climate control, cruise control and adjustable steering-wheel alignment can all be specified on this range to improve the comfort of the driver during use.
When it comes to safety, the Renault Kangoo has a lot of convenient technology on board in its current iteration, including things such as hill-start assist to get the van moving even on steep inclines. Meanwhile, the Grip Xtend traction control system allows even this two-wheel-drive drive van to stay on the straight and narrow by managing the amount of power which goes to each wheel in real time. So if it has to be used on loose surfaces as well as the road, this may be a sensible option to add.
The Kangoo Van and Maxi models can be kitted out with a swivelling full-height bulkhead, allowing for the extension of the load space while still leaving the driver protected. It is indicative of the technology within this range, which embraces innovation in the name of convenience.
