CURRENT MODEL Mitsubishi L200 Double Cab
When launched the looks of the Mitsubishi L200 were a breath of fresh air – truly original and striking, the L200 took on a modern look and immediately propelled the pick up onto the shopping lists of many more ‘lifestyle’ buyers.
The L200 gets ABS with EBD as standard airbags for driver and passenger and a great sound system, which can play your MP3s. Choose from five trim levels – the 4work, 4life, Warrior, Animal and Diamond, (later the Barbarian has been added).
All L200 pick ups get 4WD as standard – they don’t use it the whole time – there is an easy selector to change from two- to four-wheel drive. If you opt for ne of the more expensive model, the trick 4WD gets trickier. Mitsubishi have their ‘Super Select 4WD’ that has a central diff lock and means you can drive it as fast as you like with four-wheel drive engaged – helpful in the rain or when towing. You also get special electronics to control the traction and stabiliy – usually called ESP, but Mitsubishi prefer M-ASTC (Mitsubishi Active Stability and Traction Control).
The downside to the doublecab is the lack of loadspace – this was rectified by Mitsubishi by launching the long bed (LB) version which means that the L200 can seat five in comfort and have space in the rear for more than an overnight bag.

L200 Double Cab Model Range
The L200 Double Cab is available in five models, to suit multiple audiences. It starts with the 4Work model, defining practical and affordable on and off-road motoring, featuring steel rims and a functional interior, black front grille, front skid plate, black door mirrors and rear mudguards. The go-anywhere, utilitarian 4Work Double Cab targets business users who rely on the L200’s rugged appeal and its peerless reputation for value, economy and reliability.

Added presence comes in the form of stylish, moody black satin finishing – the roof, sports grille/ resin guard, fog lamp bezels, wing mirrors, door handles, fuel filler plate, tubular side steps and rear bar. The Trojan special edition is a great-value special edition, for those wanting the Double Cab experience, with a non-commercial bias, but similar price tag and a touch of luxury and added specification. Meanwhile, the Club Cab L200 offers all the workmanlike ability of the single cab, with some of the extra cabin space and luxury of the Double Cab and come in both 4Work and 4Life specifications.
L200’s come with a 1.8-metre double-walled cargo bed made from galvanized steel and with a single, central tailgate release – after all, you only have one pair of hands – the L200 really cares for your load. L200 Model Range: In Detail
Low and High Series L200 variants are powered by Mitsubishi's latest technology 4D56 2.5-litre turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine, featuring 16 valves driven by dual overhead camshafts and a common-rail direct injection system for precise fuel delivery, lowering consumption and emissions.
There are two options: ‘Medium Power’ for the Single, Club and 4Work/4Life and Trojan special Double Cabs and a ‘High Power’ version for the Warrior and Barbarian Double Cabs.
The medium power engine produces a peak power figure of 134 bhp at 4,000 rpm and a huge 231 lb ft of torque (314Nm) from just 2,000 rpm – giving perfect towing and off-road grunt, overtaking ability and cruising performance. The Low Series L200 can reach a maximum speed of 103 mph, and will do 0-62 mph in 15.0 seconds, while returning a combined miles per gallon figure of 34.0 (39.9 extra urban), and producing just 218g/Km CO2.
Meanwhile, the tuned High Series Double Cab Warrior and Barbarian models offer 175 bhp @ 4,000rpm and 258lb ft (400 Nm) from just 2,000rpm. This is a high performance version of the 4D56 2.5-litre turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine, featuring 16 valves driven by dual overhead camshafts and a common-rail direct injection system. Top speed is increased to 111 mph and 0-62 mph comes in just 12.1 seconds, while miles per gallon remains high at 30.1 mpg combined (34.0 extra urban), with still the same 218g/Km CO2 emissions.
L200 Easy Select 4WD
Being a natural, highly capable off-roader, all Low Series come with Easy Select 4WD – offering three drive modes, simply selected by a secondary lever by the gearstick:
• 2H (2WD High range), which is ideal for normal highway driving.
• 4H (4WD High range), which can be engaged at speeds up to 62 mph when extra traction is needed on snow, sand or dirt roads and in extreme wet tarmac conditions.
• 4L (4WD Low range), which is designed for serious off-road driving, such as fording streams and climbing steep muddy banks. (The vehicle must be stationary when transferring to 4L.)

Super Select 4WD System
The Trojan, Warrior and Barbarian High Series, 175 bhp engine L200’s have Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD System, operated by a secondary lever by the gearstick and offering quieter running and better economy with on-road driving, and an additional 4WD mode over the Easy Select System.
For many, many years Mitsubishi have been acknowledged to be the masters of tough terrain and the L200 reaps all the considerable benefits of this expertise. The Super Select system – long tested in the Shogun and unique in the world of pick-ups – enables on-road driving with either two or four wheels engaged, providing extra grip on the asphalt when you need it. Two four-wheel drive modes for use off-road will ensure that you can get out of just about anything you care to get into! The Easy Select system, featured on all 4Work and 4Life models, provides rear-wheel drive on-road and the same two off-road modes as the Super Select system. In addition it also features a heavy-duty rear differential lock, which locks the differential so that both rear wheels turn together and so provides extra traction when the going gets really, really tough!
Super Select 4WD Modes are:
2H: 2WD high range is generally best for highway cruising or city driving, giving smooth, economical performance. As driving conditions change, so can this L200 – on the move. At speeds of up to 62mph you can shift between 2H, 4H.
4H: 4WD high range is the full-time 4WD mode available only on the Super Select system. Torque is split equally between front and rear axles, offering the extra grip
needed for safe highway driving in slippery conditions. The centre differential with VCU resolves the traditional 4WD problem of transmission wind-up experienced during cornering and tight maneuvers.
4LLc: 4WD low range with the centre differential locked lowers the centre differential gear ratio. This provides greater torque for climbing or descending steep inclines at very low speeds, or for going through deep snow, mud or sand. To shift into or out of 4LLc
the L200 must be brought to a complete halt.
4HLc: In 4WD high range with the centre differential locked power is evenly distributed between the front and rear wheels, improving traction and manoeuvrability on rough roads or on sandy or snow-covered surfaces.
All L200’s are available with a manual five-speed gearbox, with single dry plate clutch with a diaphragm spring, for a direct, easy-to-use transmission feel that’s tough enough to cope with the rigours of off-road driving, towing, carrying a heavy load and any other task you might throw at it.
The L200’s five-speed manual gearbox is optimised for reliability, ease-of-use and refinement. Its tubular-structure transmission case is ultra-rigid, contributing to increased durability and reduced noise. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears benefit from trip-cone synchronising for smoother, easier shifts.
The L200’s rear differential Lock is engaged via a dashboard-mounted switch, this locks the differential so that both rear wheels turn together, a superior method of providing extra traction for coping with extreme off-road conditions.
The Warrior and Barbarian Double Cabs are available with the manual transmission, or Mitsubishi’s highly acclaimed INVECS-II automatic system, with torque convertor. There’s no denying that automatic transmission makes for an easier life, particularly when towing or in stop/start urban traffic, but INVECS-II goes one step further. By emulating your driving style it changes gear as you do – quickly adapting its shift pattern to change earlier when you’re in a rush, or later when you’re feeling more relaxed. When you want to be in total control you can simply slip into Sports Mode and flick the lever to change gear manually: It’s the best of both worlds.
11.6 inch ventilated disc brakes at the front and 11.6in drum brakes at the rear ensure the L200 stops as well as it goes. The raw stopping power of this hardware is supported by a sophisticated anti-lock braking system (ABS) that incorporates EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution).
Lateral slippage can easily occur if the rear wheels lock up due to braking hard on slippery surfaces or braking hard when at high speeds. ABS suppresses this by controlling the brakes' hydraulic pressure. EBD adjusts the rear wheels' braking force to the number of occupants and load to deliver braking force that is ideally matched to almost any situation. It’s a superior braking system, in all environments and on all surfaces – perfect for the go-anywhere L200, and when carrying heavy payloads.
The L200’s ladder frame chassis has an enlarged cross section for improved rigidity. Its inherent strength and huge resistance to torsional and bending forces make an important contribution to the driving dynamics – by allowing the suspension to do its job properly – as well as the L200’s crash safety and refinement on the road.
The L200 has a dynamic front suspension system is adapted from the Shogun, with double wishbones and coil springs providing superior ride comfort and surefooted cornering. At the rear, tough rigid elliptic leaf springs are fitted, to ensure the one-tonne payload can be safely supported – perfect for heavy commercial, and family lifestyle loads.
With the L200 range, Mitsubishi’s engineers set themselves the objective of developing a suspension system capable of delivering the kind of driving dynamics more normally associated with an SUV. To achieve this, they developed the sophisticated double wishbone and coil spring arrangement. This offers excellent wheel location, resulting in a responsive drive and an excellent ride quality: The best of both worlds.
At the rear the leaf springs are located above the rear axle. This solution has a number of benefits: the ground clearance is increased for rough terrain work; vehicle stability is improved (due to greater roll resistance); the L200 is less susceptible to changes in its cargo load; and it offers reduced noise.
The L200 adopts the Shogun's innovative power assisted rack & pinion steering system, providing a class-leading turning circle (11.8 metres) and better steering accuracy than a traditional recirculating ball system, making the big, powerful L200 as easy to maneuver in a tight space as a car. This advanced steering also helps give the car-like manners on the road and advanced capabilities off-road.
The L200 range brings much of Mitsubishi’s emissions and fuel improving technology, thanks to Mitsubishi’s “Intelligent Motion” strategy. All models come as standard with: A fuel and emission efficient turbo diesel engine, weight reduction measures and ninety 95 percent of the L200’s manufacturing materials are recyclable.

Mitsubishi has always made vehicle safety a priority – and the new L200 is no exception. With its phenomenal All Wheel Control and road-holding ability, superior brakes and grip levels, the L200 also boasts ABS with EBD. This impressive technical specification helps the driver avoid a collision, but there is also a comprehensive package of passive safety features will alleviate the risk of injury should the worst happen.
The L200 has been designed using Mitsubishi’s patented RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) system.
The stiffer, stronger ladder-frame chassis of the new L200 offers excellent crash protection and incorporates a hydro-formed box section and impact-absorbing beads. While these crumple zones absorb the energy of an impact, other, reinforced structures, such as the side impact bars, direct impact energy away from the occupants.
Driver and passenger airbags are standard across the range and a passenger airbag deactivation switch is located in the glovebox, allowing a child seat to be safely installed. Double Cab models also feature ISOFIX child seat mounting points, highlighting the L200’s multi-purpose functionality.
Seatbelt pre-tensioners and force limiters protect front seat occupants and the seats have been collapsible steering column and a setback-inhibitive pedal structure further reduce the risk of driver injury.
All three rear passengers in Double Cab models benefit from full three-point safety belts and the rear part of the roof has been carefully designed to alleviate the risk of occipital (rear head) injury. The Club Cab variant benefits from two three-point safety belts. The power windows, sunroof and retractable rear window all feature an anti-trap function to protect little fingers.
It is a comprehensive specification and Mitsubishi is proud that the L200 became the first 1-tonne pick-up to achieve a 4-star EURO-NCAP crash test rating.
The L200 is designed to minimise the risk of whiplash injuries in the event of a rear impact. Should an accident be unavoidable, the L200’s body has been designed using Mitsubishi’s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) philosophy. It features high tensile steel strengthening in key body areas and provides energy dissipation paths for collision forces and low weight, should an impact occur. The L200’s brake pedal is designed to reduce protrusion in the event of an accident, while whiplash-reducing seating limits backwards movement of the head and neck in the event of rear collisions.
It’s not just its occupants the L200 helps protect, but pedestrians too. All commercial models feature a double bulge bonnet design with a crushable zone for pedestrians, plastic front wings and an energy-absorbing front bumper, which incorporates leg injury mitigation measures. With styling DNA that has clear links to Mitsubishi’s Pajero Evolution rally raid car – which has now won the gruelling Dakar Rally on 12 occasions – the L200 pick-up convincingly fuses sporting looks with rugged practicality.

Bolder front fog lamps, a deeper, wider air intake and silver coloured skid plate complete the visual enhancements at the front of the L200, the new styling appealing to SUV drivers who are interested in the versatility of a pick-up but aren’t willing to compromise on style or comfort.
Three body styles are available – Single, Club and Double Cab – each of which posses their own, distinct identity. The Single Cab is more overtly utilitarian and will appeal to business users who want a no-nonsense working tool. The more curvaceous, step-ahead style of the Club Cab adds rear jump seats, that can accommodate two adults on short journeys. The spacious, versatile Double Cab mixes the style of an SUV with the practicality of a pick-up, offering levels of luxury equivalent to a road car.
L200 Interior Trim
The step-ahead design philosophy of the L200’s exterior is echoed inside the spacious, versatile cabin. A sweeping, fascia design has been ergonomically optimised and groups all the major controls within easy reach of the driver.
Revisions to the SUV-like interior include a new centre console and centre armrest with new handbrake and A/T shift levers. The multi-function urethane steering wheel now contains audio and cruise control switches and is tilt adjustable, while the driver’s seat adjusts for height, ensuring that drivers of all shapes and sizes can find a comfortable position.
New instrumentation feature black dials with clear white lettering and amber illumination, while all 4Work L200s featuring an AUX-in audio jack plug for listening to iPods or MP3 players via the stereo. High-quality plastics and new seat trim material feature throughout, the contemporary, quality ambience created not just pleasing to look at but also being exceptionally easy to clean.
Mitsubishi’s engineers worked tirelessly to optimise the L200’s packaging and provide as much space for passengers as possible. They have also tailored the design of the vehicle according to its likely usage – the cargo bay is optimised on the single Cab, while the Double Cab places a greater emphasis on people space. The latter has the longest cabin length in the sector and the most rear legroom as a result, while the introduction of an angled seat back dramatically increases the comfort of rear seat occupants.
Never before has a pick-up afforded so much interior space. In fact, the L200 Double Cab has the biggest cab in its class by a mile! But this vehicle isn’t just about size, it’s about paying attention to the job in hand and functional design. It’s about making the most of all that space with comfortable seats, complete with height adjustment for the driver. Well-designed and well-equipped are not words normally associated with a pick-up but this is yet another area where the L200 shows its class – some models even include a fully integrated satellite navigation/audio system together with reversing camera and Bluetooth hands-free ’phone connection. Always perfectly combining comfort with practicality there’s a level of specification to suit your needs precisely, as well as an enormous range of accessories from which you can cherry pick.
The High Series L200’s have a stunning, black leather interior (optional on Warrior, standard on Barbarian) and huge spec interior. The Warrior and Barbarian Double Cabs have a different black leather design, each with their logo embroidered into the back rests. The generous Double Cab special specification list includes, for the Warrior:

The interior fabric for all commercial and 4Work/4Life/Warrior L200’s is a stylish, practical two-tone grey, with formed-type resin doors, non-woven light grey roofing material and needle punch grey floor carpets.
