The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is high on the wish list of every van operator. The combination of rock-solid residuals, a great driving experience, safety, reliability and durability make it a solid bet new or in the used market. It is just the higher prices that the Sprinter commands that means buyers look to other commercial vehicles at all for high mileage, high volume operations.

In its current guise, the look and feel of the Sprinter reflects the manufacturer’s premium car range – let’s face it, if you have a parts supply of quality parts at the right price because you buy them in such large quantities for your cars, you’d be daft not to use them on your commercial vehicles as well.

2010 has seen some reworking of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Since the latest model Sprinter’s launch in 2006, more than 400,000 have hit the streets, (just to add to the 1.3 million of the earlier model).

The second half of 2010 has seen Mercedes introduce a completely new four-cylinder diesel engine (OM 651) and a reworked V6 diesel engine. The main reason behind the introduction of the new engines was to meet European legislation for emissions. The Euro 5 standard is now compulsory for new vans – but the EEV versions are still optional. The Sprinter’s new engines make them more economical as well as less-polluting.

The three outputs for the 4 cylinder version are
The 210, 310 and 510 have 95 hp
The 213, 313, 413 and 513 have129 hp
The 216, 316, 416 and 516have 163 hp
Compared to the engines fitted at launch, the new, Euro 5 engines have a maximum power output 8% higher.

The Mercedes Sprinter remains the only van to be fitted with a V6 engine and now has an extra 10% torque and is up on power. Sprinter buyers can specify the V6 motor in the 219, 319, 419 and 519 at 190 hp
