Ford vans have been a staple in the UK for decades, proving both reliable and innovative and helping to define what people expect from commercial vehicles.
The expansive range of Ford Transit variants has never been bigger and has been joined by compact options such as the Fiesta Van and people-movers like the Tourneo in recent years.
Ford Fiesta Van
When it comes to fuel-efficiency and small-scale practicality, this baby of the Ford van range is no slouch. Ideal for use in urban environments where space for loading and unloading may be tight, it is an inexpensive commercial vehicle that also benefits from impressive styling in its latest iteration.
Ford Transit Courier
A step up from the Fiesta Van in terms of size, while still being compact and versatile, the Transit Courier comes with up to 2.4 cubic metres of load space in the rear, which is 10 per cent more than its closest competitors. The availability of Ford’s turbo-powered 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine on this model is also an advantage, as it is both powerful and efficient in spite of its small size. Diesel engines are also available, along with an array of options such as reversing cameras, hill-start assist and integrated hands-free calling capabilities.
Ford Transit Connect
Winner of the Van of the Year award in 2014, the Transit Connect boasts up to 2.9 cubic metres of load space for the SWB edition, rising to 3.6 for the LWB model. And if you want to transport up to 1000 kilos of cargo from A to B in a reliable workhorse of a vehicle, this is the van for the job. Up to three people can be seated up front in the dedicated van version of the Transit Connect, while a seven-seat edition is also available for crew transport.
Ford Transit Custom
Good-looking, roomy and with plenty of personality, the Transit Custom boasts a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP. Occupying the midpoint in the Transit range, it is surprisingly well equipped for a commercial vehicle and has been recognised with various awards.
Ford Transit Van
The original Transit Van has evolved into this impressive current iteration, which still retains the charm of its predecessors. The latest models can come with things such as regenerative charging and auto stop-start engines to lower fuel consumption. With lots of cargo room on board, rising to 15.1 cubic metres at the upper end, it has a lot to offer in a market where there is a lot of competition.
The pick-up truck offered in the UK by Ford is a capable off-road vehicle that is great for taking on loads as well as providing enough torque to pull trailers and other equipment around, whether there is tarmac beneath its tyres or not.
Ford Tourneo Connect
As with the Transit Connect, this model can be specified with the 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine, which maximises its efficiency. Five- and seven-seat models are available, and the highly configurable seating makes it possible to adjust the load space to cater for whatever requirements may be faced. This is a people-carrier that is built for commercial use.
Ford Tourneo Custom
Up to nine seats can be made available on board this minibus model from Ford, which like many of its stable mates has been awarded the all-important five-star safety rating by Euro NCAP. The seating is similar to the Connect in its configurability, and the LWB edition adds more storage at the rear.
