The Citroen Berlingo, the first of the manufacturer’s current model range to be renewed has defined Citroen’s van styling for subsequent releases of their Nemo and Expert vans. Modern and stylish looks plus Citroen’s reputation for building good value added to Citroen’s reputation for building environmentally friendly engines make the Citroen Berlingo a solid choice. Citroen also offer excellent price promotions on their vans – their ‘special fortnights’ do represent good value and their in-house leasing company put together some good contract hire deals.

Along with Renault’s Kangoo, the first version of the Citroen Berlingo helped to shape a new category of commercial vehicle. Prior to coming onto he scene you had ‘car derived vans’ and panel vans. There was actually quite a gap in terms of size between the two. Designed to fill this gap, the Citroen Berlingo soon found favour with plenty of businesses across Europe and has gone on to be an excellent seller in both commercial vehicle and people carrier guise. Approaching 1,000,000 sales worldwide tells a story. Still al long way short form the 21,000,000 VW Beetles that have been sold, but not bad for a decade and for a van!

There is now a new sector, although the market cannot agree on quite what to call it – may people refer to the ‘high-cube’ van sector (odd because it is actually a relatively small, lo-cube van when compared to the large panel vans available). Some people still refer to it as the car-derived van sector, although this should really be retained for the few remaining models such as Vauxhall’s Astravan.
