The Mercedes-Benz Vario is undergoing a facelift and is set to receive a new drivetrain. To meet the requirements of future emissions standards, the Vario will be converted to include a new engine featuring new exhaust technology that will supplement the tried-and-trusted SCR technology and meet the Euro 6 standard. The Vario will also continue to be produced in the Ludwigsfelde plant beyond 2013.

The long-standing market success of the Vario in the high-capacity van segment is testimony to the sound investment in the vehicle and in the Ludwigsfelde plant near Berlin. The largest member of the Mercedes-Benz van product family not only combines the high load capacity of a ‘light truck’ with the agile handling characteristics of a van, but offers an equally compelling proposition with its sophisticated product quality, reliability and unrivalled combination and special-purpose body options.

Thanks to its front engine, the Vario – unlike its ‘light truck’ counterparts – does not need a tilting cab, making it ideally suited to the van concept. The driver enjoys the benefit of convenient access from the cab to the rear section of the vehicle. As a result, the Vario can be used for applications such as parcel-delivery, emergency ambulance, mobile support unit, specialist shop or camper van.

The long wheelbase panel van can offer internal load space volumes of up to 17.4m², making it the largest panel van on the market. A low loading height, ideal for both forklift and handball operation augments the high payload making the vehicle ideally suited for long haul, heavy-duty distribution.

60+ MPG:DUFF MORGAN’S MAJOR NEMO ORDER

Environmentally conscientious Central Auto Supplies (CAS) has just taken delivery of a major Citroën LCV order to further improve the fuel efficiency and emissions profile of its delivery fleet. The Wellingborough-based company, which has 19 depots, primarily in the Midlands and East Anglia, has bought 41 Nemo 1.4HDi LX vans and two Relay 35 L3H2 120 vans.

Supplied by Citroën dealer Duff Morgan, Norwich, the new Nemo vans were chosen for their fuel efficiency and low emissions during a stringent selection process. With more Nemos expected to join the CAS fleet later this year, well over half of the company’s 100+ delivery fleet will be made up of Nemos – which regularly return over 60mpg in service.
Peter Jipson, CAS operations manager, explains, “CAS is committed to reducing the environmental footprint of its vehicle fleet, through driver training and the specification of state-of-the-art technology. As such, the Nemo – which is the UK’s most fuel efficient van and has the lowest CO2 emissions for a high cube LCV van – is an excellent fit for our business. We are delighted with the Nemo’s 60+mpg fuel economy capability on our multi-drop delivery pattern and its low cost of operation.”

HomeServe, one of the UK’s leading providers of home emergency and insurance products, has invested in a fleet of Euro 5 Mercedes-Benz Sprinters after a trial unit surpassed its main competitor in a fuel test.
Thanks partly to its innovative ECO-Start technology, which saves fuel and reduces emissions by automatically cutting the engine whenever the vehicle is stationary, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter was a full 1.5mpg better than its nearest rival in a head-to-head evaluation.

HomeServe was impressed with the demonstrator’s 32.41mpg average and placed an order for 60 Medium-length, high-roofed Sprinter 313CDIs, all of which employ the ECO-Start system.
The new fleet is being supplied by North East dealer Bell Truck and Van. As the vehicles’ Euro 5 engines are not only cleaner but also even more fuel efficient than the Euro 4 version that powered the original demonstrator, HomeServe is looking forward to making even bigger savings on its fuel bills, as well as significant reductions in its carbon emissions.
Fleet Manager Adam Rickard said: “Reducing our carbon footprint was the main criterion in our minds when we embarked on this process, but we wanted to do so without compromising our standards on performance or load space. This meant we had to find a vehicle that combined the most efficient engine with a practical and easy-to-access load area, while also being strong and reliable.
“We narrowed down the choice to a couple of contenders, then ran them over a two-day trial to measure their fuel economy – which is where the Sprinter played its winning card, by coming out as the leader.”
HomeServe’s new Mercedes-Benz Sprinters are being fitted with tracking devices to accurately record the mileage they cover; used in tandem with fuel usage data, these figures will allow HomeServe to monitor their mpg performance with a high degree of accuracy over their projected four-year working life.
The vans also feature optional speed limiters that will prevent them exceeding 70mph, which have been specified as an additional means by which to improve fuel economy as well as increase safety.
HomeServe runs a fleet of 360 vans, each of which is used by a mobile engineer providing emergency plumbing and other services to homeowners nationwide. Its Sprinters have been adapted for the task by racking and storage specialist Bott, of Ashby de la Zouch. The cargo bays have been divided in half with the forward areas carrying racking and cabinets for tools, spare parts and accessories, and the rear sections waterproofed and fitted with jetting machinery for unblocking drains.

STYLISH CORSAVAN SPORTIVE DEALS ON VANLOCATOR

Great looks and good green credentials were prime factors in the choice of the Vauxhall Corsavan Sportive model by Aberdein Considine, Scotland’s leading firm of Solicitor Estate Agents.

The firm has just taken delivery of 24 vehicles, which were supplied by Vauxhall Commercial Vehicle dealer Belmont Aberdeen on time, fully liveried and ready for the road.

As one of the country’s most progressive law and estate agency firms, Aberdein Considine wanted vehicles that would make a clear statement about the company’s image. The Sportive model helps them to do just that with its sporty coupé-like appearance enhanced by a roof spoiler, alloy wheels and a sport exhaust. A metallic silver paint finish carrying a newly designed company livery completes the stylish look.

The Corsavan Sportive model also comes with excellent green credentials. It features the 1.3CDTi ECOTEC (90PS) diesel engine. This has a combined cycle figure of 58.9 mpg and can deliver in excess of 70 mpg in ‘extra urban’ conditions. Along with low emissions of 127 gms/km, this fuel efficiency will help to reduce both the company’s fuel bills and its carbon footprint.

The Corsavans are being used by Aberdein Considine staff at its 18 offices around the North East of Scotland and Perthshire. To help ensure their safety the vans bristle with standard features that include ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Emergency Brake Assist. Further protection is provided by side-impact protection beams and a steel bulkhead separating the driving compartment from the 0.92 cubic metres of loadspace.

Service intervals of 20,000 miles/1-year will help keep down maintenance costs and minimise the time the vans are off the road for servicing. The Corsavan comes with a three-year/60,000 mile warranty, with no mileage limit in the first year, and body panels are covered by a six-year anti-perforation warranty.

With low running costs and good residual values, the Corsavan Sportive offers extremely competitive whole life vehicle costs.

DESIGNS FINALISED FOR ELECTRIC KANGOO VAN

Renault has unveiled the finalised designs of their Kangoo Van Z.E., (Zero Emissions) while customers wishing to be among the first to run on electrical power can pre-reserve their vehicle at www.renault-ze.com. In registering, prospective buyers can choose their electric vehicle and benefit from priority availability as soon as it comes onto the market.
Renault estimates that electric vehicles will account for 10 per cent of the world market by 2020. Renault has revealed the electric Kangoo’s finalised design. This vehicle will be released in the first half of 2011 and will have an operational range of 160km. The electric version of Kangoo Van features the same practical functions as the internal combustion-engined vehicle, i.e. the same carrying capacity (ranging from 3 to 3.5m3), the same payload (650kg) and the same standard of comfort. On top of that, it delivers a silent ride and responsive performance, the immediate availability of torque as soon as it starts, no gear changes, low running costs and, of course, the satisfaction of owning a zero-emissions vehicle.

CORDWALLIS VW CRAFTERS RELATIONSHIP

Volkswagen Van centre, Cordwallis Heathrow, has been praised by a mobile tyre service company for its consistently good service with an order for a fleet of 14 new Crafter vans.
Tyrework operates in excess of 40 Volkswagen Crafter vans from its four specialist depots across the South East, supplying a mobile tyre service to business fleets and leasing companies.
Cordwallis Heathrow has supplied Tyrework with its Crafter fleet for the past eight years and has coordinated its ongoing fleet upgrade programme.
Mark Cooper, managing director of Tyrework, tells us: “From placing the initial order, Cordwallis manages the entire process from vehicle conversion to livery; all I have to supply is the necessary telephone number to go on the van allowing me to concentrate on running the business.”
Rob Hillcoat, Cordwallis Heathrow, sales executive, added: ‘Meeting our customers’ expectations is part of our job, so we are delighted that Tyrework finds the Crafter so spacious and reliable for its fleet, and has maintained its business with us.’

BURNT TREE INVESTS £14 MILLION IN VAN FLEET

In the biggest deal of its kind this year, The Burnt Tree Group will take delivery of 800 new vehicles having invested £14 million in its fleet. The total Burnt Tree portfolio now stands at over 9,000 vehicles.
Some of the vehicles, from the likes of Vauxhall, Ford, Citroen and Volkswagen, will replace existing vehicles which have come to the end of their life cycle. However more than 50% are additional vehicles.
Richard Metcalfe Chief Executive said: “Our utilisation figures remain very buoyant and are currently running at an all time high for the company. We are continuing on our strategy for growing the business, but haven’t been afraid to stand back and make difficult decisions where necessary.”
Richard also said: “The fact that we aren’t tied to one particular manufacturer means we can shop around for the best deals and negotiate on models we know our customers want. We can also purchase vehicles we wouldn’t normally specify in any volume if a customer knows its right for them. A good example of this is the recent contract win from FPS Distribution who delivers automotive parts to over 2,500 motor factor customers across the UK. FPS knew that the Citroen Berlingo was ideally suited to their business so we were able to source 150 plus of the exact model the customer requested.

FIAT PROFESSIONAL IN NEW FLEET DEAL

Scottish Southern Energy has committed to a 1100-vehicle supply arrangement with Fiat Professional.
The vehicles – a mix of new Doblo Cargo, Fiorino Cargo and Grande Punto van – will be funded and managed by Lex Autolease, and go into service from June this year.
“We are delighted to announce this business with our partners at SSE and Lex Autolease,” said Colin Parnell, National Key Account Manager at Fiat Group. “This confirms once again that the Fiat Professional range provides a very competitive low cost of ownership model for major fleets.

700 Sprinters for Balfour Beatty

The yea r has gotoff to a good start for Mercedes-Benz Vans, which has received a major order from Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions (BBUS) for 700 Mercedes-Benz Sprinters. BBUS has its headquarters in Sheffield, offers solutions for energy- and water-providers and is part of Balfour Beatty, one of the largest construction firms in the UK and more than 30,000 employees worldwide. Delivery of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinters is set to begin in May 2010.

This major order consists primarily of Sprinter 313 CDI panel vans of 3.5 tons GVW. Mercedes-Benz will also deliver Sprinter chassis with various bodies, as well as a number of five-ton variants.
