Riteweld chose the 3C13 Canter after enjoying 10 years’ service from a previous model. “The nature of our business meant it had to withstand a fair amount of punishment,” said Mr Young, “but that truck proved to be an exceptionally strong and reliable workhorse. So, of course, when it finally reached the end of the road, another Canter was at the top of our list.”
Supplied by Milton Keynes dealer Intercounty Truck & Van, Riteweld’s new vehicle is fitted with a long, 5.0-metre dropside body by Newlands Coachworks, of Northampton.
“Our new Canter is a world apart from the last one,” confirmed Mr Young. “The cab is much more comfortable and better appointed, and the auto ’box impressively smooth.
“Although most of our customers are based in Oxfordshire and Warwickshire, we also work in London from time to time. We couldn’t take our old vehicle into the city because it didn’t meet the emissions regulations, but with this new one we’ll be covered for years to come.”

Robert Willmott, Hewer FM’s Contract Manager, explains; “We have had a long and successful operating experience with Berlingo vans, which now form the majority of our 65-strong fleet. As an environmentally conscious company, every fleet renewal time we carry out a comprehensive review to see whether there is a van that can beat the Berlingo. To date we have continued to acquire Berlingos because of their unbeatable combination of environmental, operational, financial and driver benefits. Mr Willmott adds; “Berlingos also provide us with other cost savings and productivity benefits, as they are running on 30 per cent biodiesel fuel. Also, the standard fit Trafficmaster Smartnav satellite navigation system and Trackstar stolen vehicle tracking means we have achieved additional cost savings and lower insurance premiums.”
Supplied by Citroën Business Centre, Warners Citroën of Cheltenham, Hewer FM has acquired its latest Berlingo vans on a mix of outright purchase and three-year, 60,000 mile Arval contract hire with maintenance agreements. “Just like the CitroënBerlingos we have replaced, we expect these new Euro 5 Berlingos to deliver on our key environmental, economical and operational requirements. As such we expect them to provide additional fuel cost savings of many thousands of pounds and drive our CO2 emissions down by several tonnes a year,” concludes Robert Willmott.

Mercedes-Benz UK has launched a brand new Online Service Advisor for customers to book a vehicle service, MOT or repair.

The new site, www.mercedes-benzvanservicing.co.uk enables Mercedes-Benz van owners to get a no-obligation quote and also complete an online booking 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The site uses the individual vehicle specification, age and mileage to provide users with a bespoke price for a service, MOT and range of repairs, including: front headlight replacement; brake pads and discs; starter motor replacement; wiper blades; and more.

Customers can choose their preferred Dealer from a selection, listed by nearest first distance. There is also a guide to the services that each Dealer offers.

Ian Dutfield, Customer Services Director of Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles said: “We hear sometimes about the misconception that work carried out by a specialist dealer can cost more, but we’re completely transparent with our pricing and to prove it, we’ve created the Mercedes-Benz Online Van Service Advisor.”

The Southampton-based company has purchased 25 Long-bodied Sprinter 313CDIs from local dealer Pentagon Commercials – and it’s already planning to return for more before the end of the year.
The company operates 123 vans from a network of depots located through south and central England – its new Mercedes-Benz vehicles are based in Bedfordshire and Surrey.
Millbrook Healthcare acquired its first Sprinter, a Euro 4 311CDI model, three years ago, and ran it alongside its established supplier’s vans for comparison purposes.
“That Sprinter hasn’t missed a beat; we’ve not had a single issue,” confirmed Contracts Manager Gary Burnham. “What’s more, the drivers have definitely preferred it to our other vehicles, and it’s been more economical on fuel too.”
Having been impressed with the fuel-efficiency of its original 311CDI, Millbrook Healthcare can now look forward to even bigger savings from the Euro 5 model which has superseded it. That’s because as well as being cleaner – CO2 emissions are down by 13 per cent – the latest Sprinter 313CDI is also 15 per cent more economical, this improvement equating to an extra 4.5 miles per gallon.
Also key to the appeal of its new vans for Millbrook Healthcare was the market-leading reputation that the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, along with its Vito stablemate, enjoys for safety – both models come with an extensive list of standard safety features, including the Adaptive version of the ESP® electronic stability system, which adjusts its settings to take account of a vehicle’s changing load status.
Mr Burnham – who describes himself as “a big Mercedes-Benz fan” – continued: “We take our Duty of Care obligations to employees very seriously so safety was at the top of our list of priorities when we ordered these Sprinters.”
The new vans came with market-leading, three-year, unlimited mileage warranties, while Millbrook Healthcare has also signed-up to a three-year ServicePackage covering all labour, materials and lubricants required in routine servicing at an official Mercedes-Benz workshop.
“Pentagon were very helpful in arranging the ServicePackage, which fixes our costs and therefore allows us to budget with confidence,” added Mr Burnham.

Fitness First – the world’s largest health and fitness group, with over 435 fitness clubs in 15 countries – is now operating 36 Citroën Berlingo and Dispatch vans.

Glyn Allen, Fitness First’s Head of Contracts, remarked: “Our move to an all-CitroënLCV fleet reflects our continuing satisfaction with long-term suppliers Citroën and Fleethire. As a Carbon Trust Standard award-winning company, Fitness First is actively engaged in reducing its energy consumption and carbon emissions. With improved combined cycle fuel economy of 52.3mpg and lower CO2 emissions of just 140g/km, our new Euro 5 Berlingo vans meet the company’s demanding environmental, operational and financial requirements.”

Fitness First’s new Berlingo vans will be used by its maintenance technicians, who maintain the company’s swimming pools, buildings and gym equipment at the 150 Fitness First and Klick Fitness Gyms in the UK. To suit this role the new Berlingo vans are custom-racked and lined. Equipped by Fleethire, each van now has a vice that slides out of the rear on a beam and locks to provide a stable work station for cutting and drilling metal or masonry.

Supplied by Citroën Business Centre WR Davies, Stafford, Fitness First’s new Citroën LCVs are being operated on 48 month/80,000 mile Fleethire with-maintenance contract hire agreements.

Fitness First was the first company of its kind in the UK to be awarded the Carbon Trust Standard. As part of its commitment to cut its emissions and energy consumption, Fitness First has achieved significant reductions of some 12% in less than 5 years and the Citroën vans have been an integral part of this strategy.

We have included as many details as we can about the new range of doublecabs and the background of the company. Expect to see more from the Chinese over the years to come.

This significant milestone for the company has been reached 35 years after the first Great Wall vehicle rolled down the company’s production line in Baoding, Hebei Province, near Beijing. In the interim period, the brand has become China’s largest SUV producer, building total assets of £2.7 billion and an employee base of over 45,000 people worldwide. Great Wall is also the only privately-owned Chinese automotive company to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Recently, Great Wall’s annual production capacity was expanded to 800,000 vehicles per annum with the opening of an all-new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at the coastal port of Tianjin, 60 miles from Beijing. This new plant is forecast to produce 400,000 examples of eight different Great Wall models – many of them destined for export markets. The company’s strategic plan is to produce 1.5 million vehicles per annum by 2015.

To demonstrate the all-terrain capabilities of its vehicles in some of the world’s toughest environments, Great Wall entered a race-homologated version of the Haval SUV in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Dakar Rally, achieving a notable seventh place in this year’s event.

The company boasts impressive credentials in the production of pick-ups. It has manufactured the best-selling pick-up in China every year since 1998, and the Steed pick-up that makes the brand’s debut in the UK attracts around 120,000 customers in its domestic market each year, with 700,000 sold to date. The company plans to export approximately 40,000 Steeds in 2012.
Great Wall is making substantial investments in ongoing product development. For example, the company is building a brand new, £500 million R&D Technology Centre close to its headquarters in Baoding City. The facility will occupy an area of 250,000 square metres and accommodate 5,000 engineers.

Great Wall already exports its range of small and large family cars, SUVs and pick-up trucks to over 120 countries around the globe, including South Africa, Australia and Italy. Now it is seeking to establish itself in the UK, one of the world’s most demanding markets for pick-up vehicles.

The 2012 Great Wall Steed – overview

The Great Wall Steed is a robust and highly practical pick-up that will offer unrivalled value for money. Prices start at just £13,998 (CVOTR) for the generously equipped Steed S model – the lowest for any double-cab 4×4 pick-up in the UK.

The Steed also delivers class-leading urban fuel economy from its newly-developed 2.0-litre, 16-valve turbocharged diesel powerplant (30.1 mpg urban; 37.7mpg extra urban; 34.0 mpg combined). To further keep down costs of ownership, the Steed boasts the lowest insurance ratings (from 7A) of any vehicle in the pick-up segment.

The Steed goes on sale through a brand-new, nationwide network of 40 Great Wall dealers. Hand-picked to reflect the brand’s values and philosophy, the dealers have promised standards of customer service that will break new ground in the pick-up market.

The vehicle’s chunky appearance – amplified by muscular wheel-arches and high ground clearance – signals durability as well as the Steed’s capabilities as a versatile load-lugger, both on- and off-road. Under the galvanised steel skin lies a separate, rust-proofed ladder-frame chassis, strengthened and braced by reinforced middle cross-members, an impact-resistant rear beam and a reinforced cargo bed.

Carrying capacity compares very well with established pick-up rivals, the spacious cargo bay measuring 1,380 mm x 1,460 mm x 480 mm (length, width, depth). The maximum payload is 1,000 kg and towing capability is 2,000 kg with a ‘braked’ trailer and 750 kg unbraked.

There is also an abundance of space inside the double-cab. The Steed’s four-door body provides ample headroom, as well as class-competitive leg and shoulder room, front and rear, for the driver and up to four passengers. Storage areas are plentiful, including a lockable glove-box, front centre console, front door pockets with cup holders and front seatback map pockets.

When the terrain gets slippery, the driver can engage the Steed’s ‘on demand’ four-wheel-drive system simply by pressing a dashboard button – at speeds of up to 12mph. To further aid traction, the Steed gearbox has selectable low-range shifts.

All Steeds will come with a host of features typically offered as high-cost options with competitor models, including 16-inch alloy wheels, daytime running lights, remote central locking, a Thatcham-approved Category 1 alarm, electric front and rear windows, an Alpine CD/radio with USB/MP3 and Bluetooth connectivity, steering wheel mounted audio controls, air conditioning, heated seats and a full leather interior.

To make the Steed ownership proposition even more compelling, Great Wall makes a highly-attractive, seven-point promise to all its customers. This includes a commitment to collect vehicles for servicing, and the offer of fixed-price service plans.

All Steeds come with a comprehensive three-year / 60,000-mile mechanical warranty, three-year paint awrranty and a six-year anti-perforation warranty.

Model line-up for the UK

Model Price CO2 MPG Insurance

Steed S £13,998 220 34.0 7A
Steed SE £15,998 220 34.0 8A

2.	THE GREAT WALL PROMISE

Great Wall’s seven-point pledge to UK customers

In order to ensure that the test-driving, buying and ownership experience of a Steed is as rewarding and trouble-free as possible, the ‘Great Wall Promise’ has been made by all Great Wall dealers.

The first and most valuable point in this promise is peace of mind: every Steed comes with a comprehensive three-year / 60,000-mile mechanical warranty, a six-year anti-perforation warranty, three-year paint warranty and three years of roadside recovery and assistance.

Two other promises guaranteeing financial peace of mind are inflation-proof fixed-price monthly service payments, and the policy of only invoicing for work previously agreed with the customer.

To minimise the customer’s working downtime, the Great Wall dealer will endeavour to keep them mobile at all times while their Steed is being serviced or repaired under warranty.

Two of the seven promises ensure convenience: test drives at the location of the enquirer’s choice (if they live or work within 20 miles of a Great Wall dealer), and free service pick-up and drop-off for customers up to 20 miles away from the dealer.

The seventh of the promises reminds dealers of Great Wall’s dedication to ethical business practice: a promise to keep all promises – ensuring that dealers keep their word and do what they say.

Dealer network

So far, 40 dealers nationwide have been hand-picked to deliver ‘The Great Wall Promise’, with more expected to sign-up in the coming year. Dealer coverage currently extends from Exmouth, Devon, in the south to Inverness, Scotland in the north, and from Pwlheli, Gwynedd in the west to Halesworth, Suffolk, in the East.

3. DESIGN

Super-tough appearance with car-like detailing

The 2012 Steed has a super-tough appearance consistent with its character, its exceptional functionality shaping its form. The high-standing lower edges of the bodywork affirm the Steed’s useful ground clearance, its muscular wheel arches accommodating deep wheel wells allowing for generous vertical suspension travel over rough terrain.

The solid, car-like front-end features a high bonnet line and deep grilles above and below the protective bumper. Beneath the lower half of the grille, the bodywork houses dual cylinder-style daytime running lights. Sculpted lines lead airflow around the lower-edges of the deep headlamps towards the Steed’s flanks, where protective rubbing strips run along the whole length of the vehicle.

Attractive, two-colour tail lamps occupy a deep space either side of the tailgate, which folds-down flat at the same level as the capacious loading bay.

The Steed is available in Titanium White and five metallic colours (optional, at extra cost) – Pearl Black, Sky Silver, Noble Grey, Jewel Red and Jade Green.

4.	COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE

New Steed – highly specified as standard

Great Wall’s engineers put customers’ everyday needs and safety at the top of their priority list when designing the new Steed.

Consequently, every Steed is equipped with a comprehensive range of passive and active safety features, including a disc/drum braking system with ABS and EBD back-up, driver and front passenger airbags, three-point seatbelts for five occupants, four height-adjustable head restraints and anti-intrusion beams in all doors.

As part of Great Wall’s generous specification, the entry-level Steed S (£13,998 CVOTR) comes equipped with many features that would be listed as extra-cost options on pick-ups from other brands.

Standard on all new UK Steeds are 16-inch alloy wheels, daytime running lights, remote central locking, a Thatcham-approved Category 1 alarm, electric front and rear windows, an Alpine CD/radio with USB/MP3 and Bluetooth connectivity, steering wheel mounted audio controls, four-speaker audio system, manual air-conditioning, individually heated front seats and a full leather interior.

For Steed buyers seeking the ultimate pick-up from Great Wall, the range-topping luxury SE model costs just £2,000 more (£15,998 CVOTR), and features the following items of additional equipment above the S model: body-coloured hard-top canopy, body-coloured spoiler, chrome trim to daytime running lights, chrome side bars, black roof rails, load bay liner, and rear parking sensors.

For more details of standard equipment and options, please see the Equipment section.

5.	PRACTICALITY

A dependable workhorse that’s loveable at weekends

Versatile practicality is the Steed’s great strength. With a spacious cargo bed behind a four-door double cab, the Steed is equally useful as a weekday workhorse or a weekend getaway vehicle. For carrying heavy loads, towing trailers or caravans, moving bulky items, taking trips to the refuse site, carrying camping gear and bicycles, or simply transporting up to five passengers in comfort, the Steed meets each challenge with ease.

The Steed’s capacious cargo bay measures 1,380 x 1,460 x 480 mm (length, width, height). The use of leaf-spring rear suspension ensures that the rear wheel housings have the smallest possible intrusion on the loading area.

Gross vehicle weight is 2,885 kg (2,785 kg when towing) and the maximum payload is 1,000 kg. Towing capability is 2,000 kg with a ‘braked’ trailer and 750 kg unbraked.

The Steed’s double-cab, four-door body gives easy access to the interior, which provides generous headroom and class-competitive leg and shoulder room, front and rear. Storage areas include a lockable glove-box, front centre console, front door pockets with cup holders and front seatback map pockets.

With a 194 mm ground clearance and switchable two-wheel/four-wheel-drive, the Steed is a rugged companion for every journey, on or off road. The Steed’s approach, departure and ramp angles – 30.0, 24.0 and 17.5 degrees, respectively – enable it to traverse rough terrain, making it more than capable of meeting the typical demands it’s likely to meet on building sites, farmers’ fields or horse paddocks.

6.	ENGINE

Super-quiet and powerful new 2.0-litre diesel

Fitted with Great Wall’s newly developed 2.0-litre, 16-valve turbocharged diesel engine, the new Steed delivers impressive power outputs and class-leading fuel economy.

The water-cooled 1,996 cc powerplant is fitted with a CAC (charge air cooled) intercooler system, state-of-the-art glow plug technology and a variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT). Employing high-pressure common-rail direct injection and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), the new four-cylinder diesel achieves a maximum output of 71 ps per litre.

Great Wall’s use of an advanced Delphi third-generation, high-pressure common-rail direct injection system contributes to greater fuel economy, while lowering emissions, reducing engine noise and improving power output.

The variable geometry turbocharger features turbine blades that alter their pitch according to engine speed – to provide the Steed with high levels of pulling power throughout the rev range, and maximum torque from as low as 1,800 rpm.

With a long-stroke design for optimum torque generation, the Steed engine features an 83.1 mm bore and a 92.0 mm stroke, with a rigid block structure and direct injection fuel system, greatly reducing noise and vibration while on the move. The engine has a 16.7:1 compression ratio and produces maximum power of 143 ps at 4,000 rpm, and maximum torque of 305 Nm over a broad rev-band from 1,800 to 2,800 rpm.

This new engine from Great Wall Motor delivers class-leading fuel economy – 30.1 (urban), 37.7 (extra-urban) and 34.0 mpg (combined) – with a CO2 rating of 220 g/km.

7.	TRANSMISSION AND DRIVETRAIN

Best of both worlds – 2WD economy, 4WD traction

The Steed’s torquey diesel engine delivers its performance via a six-speed manual gearbox. The lower gear ratios have been specified to exploit the engine’s strong low-speed pulling power, even when towing or carrying considerable weight. First gear is a low 4.179:1 ratio, while the high sixth gear ratio of 0.696:1 minimises engine noise and enhances fuel economy at cruising speeds.

Steed is fitted with an ‘on-demand’ part-time, four-wheel-drive system that delivers numerous customer benefits. When slippery conditions are encountered on-road or an all-terrain capability is required off-road, the driver can select all-wheel-drive simply by pressing a dashboard button. This is selectable on the move, at speeds up to 12 mph.

The advanced transmission system, manufactured for Great Wall by BorgWarner, is the dual-range type seen in other serious off-road vehicles. The conventional, single-reduction gearing is for everyday road speeds, the planetary double-reduction gearing for low-speed off-roading or load-pulling when maximum torque must be delivered to the front and rear axles.

There are three electronic selector buttons, giving the options of two-wheel-drive (2H), four-wheel-drive (4H), and four-wheel-drive in low ratio (4L), the latter selectable only when stationary.

By having part-time, rather than permanent, four-wheel-drive, the Steed combines the fuel economy advantages of two-wheel-drive in everyday driving conditions (through reducing levels of mechanical resistance by disconnecting the front wheels from the driveline), with the superior traction of four-wheel-drive when the conditions require it.

8.	RUNNING GEAR

Conventional, dependable and affordable technologies

The Steed has the uncomplicated, sturdy architecture typical of pick-ups, with a separate steel bodyshell mounted on a ladder-frame chassis. To ensure adequate rigidity, load-carrying capacity and crashworthiness, the chassis is strengthened and braced by reinforced middle cross members, an impact-resistant rear beam and a reinforced cargo bed.

Front suspension is fully independent, employing double wishbones and an unequal length torsion-bar, with an anti-roll bar for optimised body control.

At the rear, the heavy-duty axle is suspended by semi-elliptic steel leaf springs to achieve the optimum compromise between loading capability and travelling comfort. This live axle design has the added advantages of robustness, good ground clearance (194 mm), and minimal intrusion on the load bay.

Power assistance for the rack-and-pinion steering system is hydraulic. The system gives the driver more precision and feel than the recirculating ball systems found on many other pick-ups. The steering is geared for 3.78 turns lock-to-lock, while the turning circle is 13.5 metres.

The Steed’s braking system provides reassuring retardation for the fully-laden vehicle weighing up to 2,885 kg and capable of towing a 2,000 kg trailer.
The ventilated front discs measure 280 mm in diameter, while 295 mm drums are fitted at the rear. The braking system’s performance is supported by electronic ABS anti-lock and brake force distribution systems.

Sixteen-inch alloy wheels are standard equipment on both S and SE models, shod with 235/70 R16 tyres.

Sales at these levels cannot be supported, especially as the Astravan is not marketed anywhere else in Europe.
Vauxhall will attempt to fill the gap with the Combo for the time being and focus their energies on getting the replacement for the Vivaro out for 2014 – built in Luton after a EU150 million investment programme.

The all-new Isuzu D-Max delivers the perfect blend of rugged ability with performance and comfort, making it the ideal work-mate for professional tradespeople.

On sale from June 2012, the tough new Isuzu D-Max is available as a double, single and, for the first time in the UK, extended cab body configuration featuring rear-opening side-access panels. The double cab variant is available in four specification levels, Isuzu D-Max, Eiger, Yukon and Utah

Powered by a highly fuel-efficient, 2.5-litre twin-turbo common-rail diesel engine, the Isuzu D-Max generates 163 ps and peak torque output of 400 Nm at 1400 rpm and is available with newly-developed six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmissions. Fuel economy has also improved over its predecessor, with the Isuzu D-Max recording class-leading figures of 38.2 mpg (combined), boasting a 10 per cent increase over the outgoing model.

The all-new Isuzu D-Max pick-up has undergone one of the most comprehensive development programmes in the company’s history. Succeeding the hugely popular Rodeo, the Isuzu D-Max is the most efficient and most refined Isuzu pick-up ever produced, while retaining the legendary toughness for which the brand has become renowned the world over. It is also a highly capable load-lugging workhorse with a three-tonne (braked) towing capacity.

In the UK, prices range from £14,499 to £21,499 (Commercial Vehicle On The Road / CVOTR), allowing a VAT-registered company to reclaim the VAT on the purchase of a all-new Isuzu D-Max.

To ensure the all-new Isuzu D-Max is built to last, it underwent 4,000,000 kilometres of endurance testing, the equivalent of 100 times around the world.

William Brown, General Manager of Isuzu UK, said: “The new Isuzu D-Max is a significant step forward from its very successful predecessor. It is a highly capable tool for those working in the outdoors, and yet is extremely refined. It features an efficient Euro5-compliant engine, while also exhibiting that rugged toughness for which the Isuzu brand has built such a solid reputation. Every model is well-equipped and offers unbeatable load-lugging and payload capacities. It delivers on every count without compromise.”

The wheelbase of the new Isuzu D-Max is 3,095mm (45mm more than Rodeo) while the overall length (bumper-to-bumper) has increased by 215mm to 5,295mm. The track of both the two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive variants has increased by 50mm (over Rodeo) to 1,510mm and 1,570mm respectively.

The increased dimensions contribute to a more spacious cabin and improved ride and handling. Despite its longer and wider body, the all-new Isuzu D-Max has a turning circle of 11.8 metres (4×2) / 12.2 metres (4×4).

In addition to the Isuzu D-Max’s competitive purchase price and fuel economy, running costs are kept down by 12,000 miles or 24-month service intervals. Isuzu’s legendary reliability is backed by a three-year / 60,000 mile bumper-to-bumper mechanical warranty, three-years’ recovery and assistance cover, and a six-year anti-corrosion warranty.

2.	Styling and design

Tough on the outside, flexibility and comfort on the inside

Famed for its understated yet purposeful appeal, the traditional super-tough appearance of Isuzu’s products is combined in the all-new Isuzu D-Max with fresh, car-like detailing and a strong road presence.

The exterior of the Isuzu D-Max has been designed to look tough, poised, ready to work. Isuzu D-Max features bold styling for the front fascia and grille, headlamps, pillars and loadbay, with strong lines running the full length of the vehicle’s side panels.

The front of the pick-up displays a wedge-shape, enhanced by muscular fenders which flare at the wheel arches, giving the all-new Isuzu D-Max a wider, more athletic frontal view compared to the Rodeo. The A-pillar has been moved forward 100mm and set at a more acute angle leading to the lowered roofline. Reinforcing the pick-up’s tough look, the bigger grille is placed higher within the fascia, butting up to the leading edge of the bonnet.

The Isuzu badge on the front grille is bigger than before, reiterating the Isuzu D-Max’s rugged new look.

In keeping with this ‘tough’ design philosophy, the headlamps have been designed to follow the natural flow lines of a pick-up, creating an assertive appearance. For the first time for an Isuzu model in the UK , Isuzu D-Max is equipped with daytime running lights mounted in the front bumper. The Isuzu D-Max also features largest-in-class tail lamps, which feature brighter LEDs on higher-specification models for greater visibility and a more premium appearance.

The entry-level Isuzu D-Max is equipped with either 15-inch steel wheels (4×2 single cab) or 16-inch steel wheels (4×4 single cab), while the Isuzu D-Max Eiger receives five-spoke, 16-inch alloy wheels, and the Isuzu D-Max Yukon and Utah models are fitted with six-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels.

In line with their upmarket specification, Isuzu D-Max Eiger, Yukon and Utah feature usefully large external rear-view mirrors, finished in chrome, and incorporating the turn indicator ‘repeaters’. They also feature power adjustment and auto-fold on Eiger models and above. Set lower than on its predecessor, the mirrors are positioned to minimise wind noise, improve airflow and improve the driver’s vision.

Extensive aerodynamic testing ensures optimal airflow over the tailgate – resulting in a class-best drag coefficient of 0.47 Cd, a five per cent reduction in drag over the previous model. Testing of the all-new Isuzu D-Max’s aerodynamic efficiency took place in several wind tunnels around the world, including the Japan Railway Research Institute, where the famous Bullet Train is evaluated.

In keeping with the Isuzu D-Max’s tough, workhorse image, the Isuzu D-Max Yukon and Utah models feature a stylish non-slip side step to aid entry and exit, while also protecting the lower-body paintwork from stone chips.

A choice of 7 exterior colours is offered: Splash White is standard; two metallic colours (Titanium Silver and Mineral Grey) and four mica colours (Garnet Red, Cosmic Black, Nautilus Blue and Tundra Green) are available at a cost of £400 (plus VAT).

Three cabin bodystyles

For the first time in the UK, the Isuzu D-Max offers three cabin styles: single, extended and double cab derivatives.

The new extended cab variant was designed from the ground up as an ‘open-cab’ pick-up. To create this space-making design, Isuzu’s engineers developed a second-row, rear-hinged door, also known as the side access panel (SAP) on each side of the vehicle. To ensure maximum strength, and safety in the event of a collision, the engineers incorporated a one-piece B-pillar into the leading edge of the side access panel.

As a result, users have uninterrupted access to the side of the cabin, ideal when loading large items behind the front seats. The side access panels can be opened from both inside and outside the vehicle.

The single and double cab derivatives maintain the traditional forward-hinged doors.

3.	Comfort and convenience

Pick-up capabilities, luxury car-like refinement

The all-new Isuzu D-Max offers occupants a greater number of interior creature comforts than any previous model from the Japanese pick-up marque.

First and foremost, occupants benefit from a bigger, more spacious cabin compared to the Isuzu D-Max’s predecessor. In the double cab variant, with the windscreen moved forward, the front-row seats have been repositioned, offering greater comfort for driver and front passengers.

A flat floor and more space under the front dash further enhances the spacious feel of the cabin. The front-row seats’ runners have been positioned further apart, creating more foot room for second row passengers, who also benefit from 25 mm of extra leg room, and a more comfortable seat back that is reclined to a 24 degree angle, compared to Rodeo’s 21 degrees.

Further space can be created in the incredibly versatile double cab thanks to 60/40 split folding rear seats. A new feature of the Isuzu D-Max is the ability to fold one section (seat base) up and one section (seat back) down independently, providing a greater number of load-configuration choices. Additional storage compartments in the floor under the rear-seat base add to Isuzu D-Max’s load-lugging versatility.

In the extended cab derivative, seat cushions fold down from the back panel, creating additional seating, with fold-out thigh supports offering occupants even greater levels of comfort.

Superior refinement

As well as impressive cabin space and exceptional comfort for drivers and passengers, Isuzu engineers have spent thousands of hours optimising Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH). Engine bay sound proofing, as well as improved cabin and body mountings, makes the Isuzu D-Max one of the quietest vehicles in its class, a level comparable with modern passenger cars.

The new, sleeker exterior design also dramatically reduces drag resistance and wind noise. The Isuzu D-Max’s door window frame design is now flatter, which means that the door sits closer to the door seals, providing better insulation from exterior noise and a quieter ride when travelling on motorways.

Because of the shallower windscreen angle, the first-row doors are longer, with wide opening angles enabling easier entry and exit for passengers.

Generous Equipment

The generous standard specification sets the all-new Isuzu D-Max out as a class leader, whether as a pure workhorse or a versatile work and leisure vehicle.

The Isuzu D-Max, in double cab guise, is available in four specification models in the UK: ‘Isuzu D-Max’; ‘Eiger’; ‘Yukon’; and ‘Utah’.

The entry-level Isuzu D-Max features a generous specification that includes as standard: air-conditioning, all-round electric windows, 15-inch steel wheels (4×2 single cab) and 16-inch steel wheels (4×4 single cab), electronic two-wheel-drive / four-wheel-drive selection-on-the-fly, easy-clean vinyl floor covering, daytime running lights, front/side/curtain airbags and radio/CD player with two speakers. This model is priced from £14,499 (CVOTR) for the single cab 4×2; £16,249 (CVOTR) for the single cab 4×4; £16,749 (CVOTR) for the extended cab 4×4; and £17,749 (CVOTR) for the double cab 4×4.

Priced from £18,499 (CVOTR), the Isuzu D-Max Eiger double cab 4×4 adds 16-inch alloy wheels, body-coloured bumpers, an additional two speakers plus iPod/USB/Bluetooth connectivity, remote central locking and central locking, carpet floor trim, heated and folding door mirrors (including repeaters), chrome door handles and projector headlamps. The Isuzu D-Max Eiger double cab 4×4 automatic is priced from £19,499.

Expected to be the biggest selling variant in the UK, the Isuzu D-Max Yukon double cab 4×4 (from £18,999 CVOTR) and comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, a six speaker audio package with an ‘Exciter’ speaker in the roof lining, leather steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, chrome grille and rear bumper, side steps, LED rear lights, rear load liner and management information display on the dash. The automatic model costs £19,999 CVOTR.

On range-topping Utah models, a large, circular Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) selector, located on the cabin’s centre console, allows occupants to control temperature and fan settings with a single control. The system automatically maintains the set temperature for optimal passenger comfort.

Front seats on Utah models feature six-direction electric adjustment setting, including height, fore and aft, and recline. The ‘wrap-around’ seat design secures occupants position when travelling over rough terrain.

The Isuzu D-Max Utah double cab 4×4 benefits from automatic climate control air-conditioning, full leather upholstery with heated front seats and powered driver’s seat, roof bars and rear parking sensors. Pricing is from £20,499, rising to £21,499 for the automatic model.

4.	Engines and performance

Re-engineered, super-efficient 2.5-litre twin-turbo diesel

In pursuit of improved efficiency and lower CO2 emissions, Isuzu rationalised the two-strong engine line-up from the Rodeo, to a single powertrain for the all-new Isuzu D-Max.

The improvements in the performance of the engine have been achieved following a comprehensive re-design by the Isuzu powertrain development team, based in Thailand.

The new engine meets stringent Euro5 emissions standards.

This is a significantly re-engineered 2.5-litre twin-turbo common-rail diesel engine, produces 163 ps (120 kW) at 3,600 rpm and 400 Nm of torque between 1,400 and 2,400 rpm. This new engine delivers a 20 per cent increase in power and 43 per cent rise in torque, compared with the previous 2.5-litre engine. In fact, it betters the power and torque output of the higher-powered 3.0-litre engine previously offered.

The new engine, despite its high power output, is one of the cleanest powertrains available in the pick-up segment, and is more efficient than many lower-powered engines. CO2 emissions of 194 g/km and class-leading fuel economy across the range (38.2 mpg: Isuzu D-Max 4×4 single cab), a 10 per cent increase over the outgoing model, reduce the overall running costs of the Isuzu D-Max.

The common-rail fuel-injection system is now pressurised to 200 Mpa (previously 180 Mpa), and employs smaller injectors which combine to improve combustion efficiency, simultaneously increasing engine performance and fuel economy.

The two-stage turbocharging design comprises a low-pressure turbocharger linked to a high-pressure turbocharger. The low-pressure turbo works at lower engine speeds, contributing to a flat torque curve across the rev range. The engine’s intercooler has been moved to the front of the engine bay, allowing engineers to increase its size.

To significantly decrease the Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions of the Isuzu D-Max, the engine has been equipped with a dual Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. With the ability to circulate both hot and cooled gases, the engine can accurately regulate combustion temperature, ensuring it remains at optimum operating temperature at all times, reducing harmful gases emitted during combustion.

The new 2.5-litre engine is complemented by two new transmissions, a six-speed manual and five-speed automatic. The six-speed manual transmission has been engineered with a close-ratio gear set, providing more progressive gearing for an easier, more linear driving experience. The first gear (5.232:1) provides an ideal ‘crawling’ gear for low speed operation across a variety of terrains. The manual transmission is available on all four specification levels of the Isuzu D-Max. This ‘crawler’ gear is ideal for very rough terrain and steep inclines or declines.

Conversely, the sixth gear ratio (0.728:1) provides an overdrive function that reduces engine revs and lowers fuel consumption at high driving speeds.

Isuzu offers the largest range of automatic pick-up models on the market. The new five-speed automatic comes with sequential manual shift control so that drivers can take direct control of gear selection for a more engaging experience – or allow the transmission to operate fully automatically to suit their mood and the terrain.

Drivers can switch between two-wheel and four-wheel-drive easily with the stylish dial control located on the centre console. The Isuzu D-Max’s shift-on-the-fly dial means drivers can switch to the preferred drive with greater ease, switching between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive (high speed) can be performed at speeds up to 60 mph (100 km/h). To operate four-wheel-drive (low speed), the vehicle must be stationary with the transmission in neutral, before it can be engaged.

5.	Chassis and running gear

New chassis, new suspension, same world-class performance

To improve the ride and handling characteristics and to increase stability of the all-new Isuzu D-Max – both on- and off-road – Isuzu’s engineers have endowed the new model with a longer, wider and stronger chassis.

The new chassis’ side rails have an increased cross-sectional dimensions (90 x 173.6mm, up from 80 x 138.9mm) resulting in a stronger, more stable structure. The Isuzu D-Max’s chassis incorporates cross braces (added to the second and fourth cross members) for increased rigidity and enhanced occupant safety.

The upgraded on-road sophistication of the Isuzu D-Max does not detract from its remarkable off-road talents. The 4×4 double cab’s ground clearance is a generous 235mm (+ 30mm over Rodeo), while approach, departure and ramp angles of 30.0, 22.0 and 22.0 degrees confirm the Isuzu D-Max as incredibly accomplished all-terrain vehicle. It also boasts a maximum transversing angle of 49.0 degrees.

As appropriate for a tough, world-class off-road pick-up, the all-new Isuzu D-Max is endowed with fully independent, double wishbone front suspension with gas-filled shock absorbers. This delivers exceptional ride and handling on the road, as well as soaking up the most severe bumps across off-road terrain.

At the rear, the pick-up is fitted with new, longer leaf springs, specifically tailored for two- and four-wheel drive models. On two-wheel-drive models, the leaf spring design is longer and flatter than the previous model, mounted under the axle, ‘under slung’, to keep the load bay floor height from the ground to the minimum. Conversely, the four-wheel-drive variants have their springs mounted above the axle, ‘over-slung’, for improved handling during off-road operation.

The Isuzu D-Max’s double cab cargo dimensions, payload capacity and towing weights are among the very best available in the UK’s pick-up marketplace. Isuzu engineers also created a wider tailgate opening to maximise ease of loading.

The double cab’s cargo bay measures 1,552mm long x 1,530mm wide, (an increase of 138mm and 70mm respectively over its predecessor). Braked towing capacity remains as impressive as its predecessor at 3,000kg (750kg unbraked).

6.	Safety

Leading ‘active’ and ‘passive’ safety features across the range

The all-new Isuzu D-Max’s standard ‘active’ and ‘passive’ safety features are truly outstanding for a pick-up – the result of extensive testing by Isuzu engineers. The development team recognised that for many professionals, a pick-up is chosen as a family car, as well as an everyday working tool.

The new, longer chassis is made using high-tensile strength steel, and features additional cross-member braces, meaning the torsional rigidity has increased over its predecessor. The rear cross-members not only greatly increase torsional rigidity, but also spread the weight of the payload more evenly, enhancing the vehicle’s laden handling balance, both on- and off-road.

Weight distribution has also been improved with the engine moved rearward, closer to the centre of the vehicle, and mounted closer to the ground lower the centre of gravity.

To help Isuzu D-Max drivers cope with everyday motoring hazards, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), is fitted as standard for the first time on an Isuzu. In combination with the four-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), a Traction Control System (TCS) and engine management system, the ESC intervenes in an emergency to help avoid collisions. ESC applies the brakes to one or more wheels and/or reduces engine power to ensure that the Isuzu D-Max stays on the driver’s chosen course.

The EBD feature is especially important on a pick-up which has to cope with a wide range of laden and unladen payloads. The Isuzu D-Max’s EBD compensates for the front and rear load differences during braking – before the ABS intervenes – preventing rear wheel lock-up which can affect some pick-ups.

The TCS system applies smooth braking force to the rear wheels if they’re rotating faster than the front wheels. This limits wheel spin and ensures power is distributed to the wheels with the most traction, helping to maintain progress and preventing loss of vehicle control. In combination, the electronic engine management system will reduce power output if wheel spin is detected on any road surface.

The all-new Isuzu D-Max is also equipped with a wide range of ‘passive’ safety features that protect occupants in the event of a collision. The Isuzu D-Max is fitted with six airbags as standard – front, side and curtain – providing excellent protection in more severe accidents. Front-row passengers benefit further from seatbelt pre-tensioners and belt-force limiters, while second-row passengers in double and extended cab models benefit from height-adjustable headrests, to reduce the effects of whiplash following a rear impact.

Pedestrian safety has been significantly enhanced over previous Isuzu models. The construction and design of the front fascia is engineered to minimise pedestrian injuries during an impact. The front bumper is made from polypropylene, which absorbs impact energies and is designed to ‘lift’ pedestrians onto the bonnet, rather than knocking them down.

With the turbocharger’s intercooler relocated to the front, and the whole engine moved rearward in the chassis, there is now more space between the bonnet and engine, creating a ‘cushion’ space by allowing the bonnet to deform under impact. Further design enhancements that make the all-new Isuzu D-Max more pedestrian-friendly are the recessed lights and windscreen wiper arms, both of which minimise injury-causing protrusions.

8.	History

Isuzu – the global leader in the pick-up segment

Isuzu is Japan’s best-selling medium-truck manufacturer and a world leader in the design and development of diesel engines.

Founded in 1916 by two ship-building and engineering, gas and electricity companies, Isuzu Motors is the oldest Japanese vehicle manufacturer, producing the country’s first domestically assembled car, a licensed British Wolseley A9, in 1922. The name Isuzu was adopted for its ‘standard model car’ launched in 1934 and this became the company name in 1949, when Isuzu Motors Ltd was established.

Domestic demand for Isuzu-engined trucks exploded during the late 1940s and throughout the 50s, firmly establishing Isuzu as the market leader for trucks and diesel engines. Isuzu’s Elf was launched in 1959 and is still Japan’s best-selling light-duty truck.

Today, Isuzu operates vehicle manufacturing facilities in Japan, Thailand, the USA and China, and diesel engine production plants in Japan, Poland and the USA. Isuzu medium-duty trucks (gross vehicle weight between 6.1 and 16 tonnes) are best-sellers worldwide and it is also the biggest diesel engine producer in the world.
