Already seen across Spain and Germany, the Mercedes Vito E-Cell has made its way over to the UK. With a 60 mile range and a six hour charge time, (using a 3 phase power supply to charge the Lithiu Ion batteries) it won’t suit many applications, which is just as well, since Mercedes are only bringing in 50 LWB versions into the UK this year. All will be triple seated and with a pair of side loading doors.
Payload is a useable 700+kgs, with no reduction in payload volume. Quiet in operation, the Vito E-Cell is quick off the mark, although it runs out of steam just after 30mph, making it perfect for London traffic, especially as it is free to park and congestion charge free. Made on the same factory line as the standard diesel Vito means that Mercedes can warranty the whole vehicle and the manufacturing standards are the same as for a diesel Vito.
The major drawback is the cost. You can’t buy the Vito outright, Mercedes are only offering it to ‘hand-picked’ customers on a four-year contract hire basis. Sounds straightforward? Before you offer to put your name down – hear the price – £1,350 per month. Start saving now.by
