Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Gearbox – the technical details

If you are really looking for some nitty-gritty detail about the Sprinter’s new Eco Gear Gearbox, then you’ve come to the right place. Mercedes has taken the opportunity to launch a new gearbox alongside their new Euro 5 4-cylinder engine and re-engineered Euro 5 V6.

The new, high-torque engines in the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter harmonise perfectly with the likewise new ECO Gear six-speed manual transmission. This makes a major contribution to fuel economy and the improved driveability and agility of the new-generation Sprinter. The new transmission was completely newly developed for use in vans, and is likewise produced in-house.

The all-new four-cylinder OM 651 diesel engine from Mercedes-Benz for their Euro 5 Sprinter is a completely new design. It only shares its overall displacement of 2.15 litres with its predecessor. It has a completely different geometry, however. While the bore and stroke were previously roughly the same, the new engine is a long-stroke unit with a bore of 83 mm and a stroke of 99 mm. This allows a high ignition pressure of 200 bar, leading to increased torque, pulling power and overall performance. The compression ratio has been reduced from 17.5:1 to 16.2:1.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Minibuses Sold

Elderly and infirm residents of East Dunbartonshire are travelling in style and safety, in a quartet of new Mercedes-Benz minibuses.

East Dunbartonshire Council has added four
Mercedes-Benz Sprinters to its fleet. Supplied by Glasgow dealer Western Commercial, each has been converted by Bluebird Vehicles, of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, to carry 16 passengers.

15,000th Volkswagen Crafter Delivered by Listers

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has sold its 15,000th Crafter van in the UK to Heateam, the heating and hot water specialist division of the Baxi Group.
The Crafter is one of 48 ordered as part of the Baxi Group’s ongoing vehicle replacement programme to update Heateam’s current fleet of Volkswagen LT32 vans.
Reliability and customer service were a key influence in remaining with the Volkswagen brand as Gordon Judge, Baxi Field Logistics Co-ordinator explained.
